The Arapahoe Philharmonic of Denver, through a continuing program to give recognition to young talent, will hold its 38th Concerto Competition for Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion students this winter. The winner will be the featured artist with the orchestra on March 7, 2008. Cash awards of $2,000, $1,000 and $500 will be presented to the three finalists.
The 90-member Arapahoe Philharmonic has been a valuable cultural asset in the Denver area since 1954. In addition to its regular concert season, the orchestra offers many services to the community including concerts for elementary school students, free summer pops concerts, and the Concerto Competition. Music Director Vincent C. LaGuardia, Jr., will be conducting our 54th season.
The competition proceeds in two rounds:

FIRST ROUND
1. Applicants must submit a complete recorded instrumental composition on compact disc or cassette tape; the composition must be at least 15 minutes' duration and must be one for which orchestral parts are generally available. In addition, the composition must NOT be on the list included at the end of this form. Those compositions have been recently performed by previous competition winners and the Arapahoe Philharmonic and are ineligible for the competition in 2008.
2. Put your name on your CD or tape for identification. Send the recording and the application form to the Arapahoe Philharmonic (AP) office postmarked by December 1, 2007. Recordings become the property of the Arapahoe Philharmonic. A $50 non-refundable processing fee must be included with the application. All CDs and tapes postmarked by December 1, 2007 (sent with the $50 fee) will be reviewed and judged without exception. No late entries will be accepted.
3. Prominent judges from the Arapahoe Philharmonic will select 6 to 10 finalists by December 15, 2007. Decisions of the judges are final. If selected as a finalist, you will be notified by December 20, 2007.

SECOND ROUND
1. The live auditions will be held on January 19, 2008, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Englewood, CO. All the finalists will participate. Contestants may play a composition different from the one submitted in the first round, provided the piece meets the same qualifications noted above. (Contact us, if you are in doubt.) If you do opt to change compositions, please inform the office of your new selection prior to the live auditions.
2. Each finalist must provide their own accompanist, along with one copy of the music for the judges. A list of local accompanists for hire will be provided, but you may select your accompanist independent of the list.
3. Finalists and their teachers will receive written judges' comments.
4. Three prominent judges from the Arapahoe Philharmonic, usually consisting of the Conductor and two resident musicians, will select the first, second, and third place winners. Decisions of the judges are final. In case of a split decision, the Conductor will decide the winner. If the judges and/or the Conductor determine that no finalist is of acceptable performance quality to perform with the Arapahoe Philharmonic, no prizes will be awarded for the current season.
5. Awards will be announced immediately following the completion of the competition. Second and Third place prizes will be presented at that time. First place prize will be presented at the Arapahoe Philharmonic concert on March 7, 2008, immediately following the winner's performance as soloist with the orchestra. The winner will also receive 4 complimentary tickets to the March concert for use by family members and friends.
6. If it is determined at the auditions that the first place winner is unable to perform with the orchestra on March 7, 2008, the second place winner will appear as the soloist and receive the first place award and scholarship. The original winner will receive the second place award.
7. Finalists are responsible for their own expenses including travel, lodging, and meals. Gratis accommodations may be available upon request.

1. Cash awards are:
First Place - $2,000 and a performance with the Arapahoe Philharmonic on March 7, 2008
Second Place - $1,000
