SYMPHONY PREP ORCHESTRA
The Symphony Prep Orchestra is dedicated to training young string players in the
art and discipline of ensemble performance to prepare them to successfully audition for the Symphony. The emphasis
of the group is on an educational experience in which performance is an outgrowth, or result of specifically developed
skills. As a result, two performances are scheduled each season beginning with the Holiday Concert and finishing
with the the Spring Concert
In addition to developing ensemble playing skills, the "Prep" experience
includes training in music theory and ear training. Sight-reading skill is key to a musicians ability to succeed
and is, therefore, included as a part every rehearsal. Students also learn the basics of conducting so they may
better understand and interpret the conductor's beat patterns and expressive directions when they are performing
as ensemble members.
As in the Symphony, Prep musicians rotate seating in order to de-emphasize competition
between players and to facilitate the development of independent musicianship as well as personal confidence.
